Just because you are at college this year for the holidays doesn’t mean you shouldn’t celebrate them the same way you always do. Being in a dorm over the holiday season is such a fun opportunity to decorate your space super cute and festive for Christmas.
These dorm Christmas decorations are super easy and mostly cheap ideas to turn your room into the cutest spot during the holiday season!
This post is all about dorm Christmas decorations!
Christmas pillow covers
Like I’ve said in other holiday decor articles, never buy actual holiday pillows… only buy pillow covers. This way, you 1) aren’t spending so much money on decorations and 2) save SOOO much space after the season is over.
Pillow covers are so much easier because you can keep the pillow out and just swap out the cover depending on the season. For example, during the fall/winter, you can go straight from Halloween pillow covers to Thanksgiving pillow covers to Christmas pillow covers.
This way, you are able to use your pillows as decorations for every holiday without ending up with a million extra pillows.
Door decorations
Decorating your door is such a cute idea when you’re in a dorm room. Especially in rooms in communal halls, it makes the whole place look so much more festive for the holidays.
There are so many ways you can decorate your door, so get creative and have fun with it!

Hanging window ornaments
These are relatively cheap and easy dorm Christmas decorations that look super classy. Especially if you choose simple ornaments like gold or silver, these decorations over the window are going to make the whole room look cute and festive.
All you have to do to hang them up is attach the ornament to some string and tape the string up on the wall. If you don’t have access to a window to do this in front of, you can just use any wall or even the door.
Stockings
Stockings are an easy way to make your dorm room feel like home during the holiday season. You can either bring stockings from home or buy cute matching ones with your roommate. Either way, they are sure to make your room look amazing during the holidays!
Letter board
I have said time and time again that letter boards are one of my absolute favorite decorations for every holiday. And the main reason for that: you don’t need to spend more money each holiday and you don’t end up with useless items for 90% of the year when it’s not the holiday season.
Once you buy a letter board once, you can use it for every holiday season, whether it be Halloween, Christmas, New Years, Easter, your birthday, and more! You can use it literally all year round.
Plus, the worst part about decorating for holidays in your dorm room is when you have a bunch of leftover decorations at the end of the season and no where to put them in your tiny dorm. This is perfect because it completely eliminates that problem!
If I haven’t sold you yet, check out this article with a bunch of cute and funny letter board quotes for when you aren’t using the board for Christmas: 39 Letter Board Quotes To Light Up Your Day
Mini Christmas tree
A mini Christmas tree is the perfect solution if you really want to decorate a Christmas tree, even if you are in a dorm at college. These are small enough to fit on top of a dresser, mini fridge, or desk and make such a cute decoration.
Especially when the lights are out and it’s nighttime, this tree will be shining bright decorating your room!
Light+photo Christmas tree
Another alternative if you don’t have the space or money to get a mini Christmas tree is to make a tree on the wall out of photos and fairy lights. Other than printing some photos, this is a pretty cheap option that still lets you have some semblance of a Christmas tree in your dorm room.
Plus, it’s so much more personable than a regular Christmas tree because it’s photos of you and all your friends. If you don’t have wall space in your room to do this, you can even use the door and it can double as a cute door decoration for the holidays.
Mini fridge decor
Don’t forget about the mini fridge when you are decorating for the holidays! If you have a white mini fridge in your dorm room, decorate it to look like a snowman.
You can 100% cut out all the pieces from construction paper and make this an almost free decoration, but if you want something super easy and don’t feel like doing that, you can buy all the pieces as stickers and just stick them onto the fridge.
Because this is a snowman, you can also keep it up longer than just the Christmas season.
Solo cup wreath
With no shortage of solo cups in college, make use of some of them by making a solo cup wreath for your room or your door. This is such a cute idea that is sure to get some laughs as people see it when they walk down the hallway!
Paper snowflakes
Seeing this seriously brought back so many memories making these in elementary school!
For this, all you need is some printer paper. Then, you just cut and fold a certain way and all the sudden you have this super cute paper snowflake. You can hang these on the door, from the ceiling, on the window, or on the walls.
They are perfect to keep up the whole winter season.

Wall art
Another easy way to repurpose things you may already have is to decorate for Christmas with wall art prints. If you originally decorated your room with frames and wall art prints, you’ve already done half the work!
All you have to do now is switch out whatever was in the frames with new, Christmas themed graphics. You can order these from Amazon, Etsy, or make them yourself on Canva!
Christmas air freshener
Don’t forget about all of your senses when it comes time to decorate your dorm for Christmas. Nothing makes a room feel more like the Christmas season than the smell.
If you have plug in air fresheners, switch out the scent for a wintery Christmas smell during the season. If not, use a bottle of Christmas-themed air freshener and spray every once in a while to keep the room smelling like the holidays.
Star lights
Star lights are such a cute decoration for the holidays! These can literally be hung anywhere in the dorm room and make it seem so much more festive.
Plus, these lights are super cute and can be used all year round as well!
Christmas banners
If you have some extra wall space to use for dorm Christmas decorations, try hanging some holiday themed banners or garlands. All you need is some tape to hang it up, and you are done! These banners could not be any easier to make your room look super cute for the holidays.
