9 Genius Dorm Room Study Tips to Keep You Productive and Distraction-Free

Your dorm room can be the perfect place to study if you know how to set it up the right way. These dorm room study tips are the perfect solution to create a productive environment that will actually help you get your shit done.

dorm room study tips

Although I was never a fan of doing a whole lot of school work in my dorm room, when I needed to, I knew I had the right environment set up. My space was tidy and distraction-free, helping me get some of my most productive work done.

If you are looking to do work in your room, learning exactly how to do this best is so important. This is going to make you so much more productive instead of wasting away your time on social media.

This post is all about dorm room study tips!

figure out if you can study in your dorm

The first step to studying in your dorm room is figuring out if you actually can study in your dorm. This will depend on how you study best, as well as your environment.

If you like background noise or studying with people, your dorm room definitely isn’t the place for you. However, if you need silence and can’t have people around to distract you, your room might work perfectly.

Also, remember to consider the environment in your room. Do you have a roommate that would be distracting? Is there a lot of noise in your room from other people?

Depending on your situation and your lifestyle, your dorm room might be the perfect place to study or might make you less productive.

make a space that you love

If your dorm room is the space you want to do a majority of your schoolwork in, make it a space that you love. This includes your desk, as well as the whole room.

If you are spending so much time there, you should definitely put some effort into what the space looks like. Have some decorations on the walls, make your bed look nice, and make sure your dorm room is one that you genuinely love being in.

Once you do this, it becomes a lot easier to sit at your desk for a while doing homework and studying for exams.

keep your desk simple

As far as your desk goes, keep it as simple as possible, while still making it a place that is decorated and organized. The more clutter you have, the more distractions you will have when you are trying to do your work.

It is so much easier if you have less on your desk. Try to keep things in drawers instead of on the surface, and limit your decorations so the desk doesn’t look cluttered and overwhelming.

Starting out with less is going to be so helpful, trust me.

Check out By Bri Boutique planners!

I created a customizable planner system for girls who do it all, but want to do it better. Start with a binder, choose your base (academic or weekly), and add the inserts that match your goals—like budgeting, health, or productivity. It’s a planner that actually fits your life, not the other way around.

have the supplies you need

That said, while you don’t want to have a crazy amount on the surface of your desk, make sure you use your desk drawers wisely so you have everything you need.

Nothing is worse than trying to do your work and needing a Post-it note or highlighter and not having it around. Keep all the school supplies, snacks, and whatever else you need to study best close by at your desk. Use your drawers to organize all of this stuff, so whenever you need anything, it is right there.

think about your senses

A commonly overlooked dorm room study tip is to consider all of your senses when setting up your desk and your room. Yes, it should 100% look nice but don’t forget about the rest.

Think about what your dorm smells like, if you have good study snacks close by, if you hear a lot of background noise, and things like this.

For the most part, you can control a lot of these things. So, figure out what works best for you and your studying habits and adjust your room accordingly. This can seriously make such a difference in your productivity when studying in your dorm room.

switch up your study spots

As much as you might absolutely LOVE your dorm room for schoolwork, don’t forget to switch up your study spots once in a while as well. It’s super easy to get burnt out and become unproductive if you study in the same spot every single day.

This could look like doing the more important work that needs all your focus in your dorm room, while doing some other, smaller assignments in other places on campus.

This way, you don’t end up absolutely hating your dorm room because all you ever do in there is study.

give yourself breaks

Regardless of where you are studying, you need to give yourself breaks once in a while.

Even if it feels like a waste of time, trust me, the break is necessary and helps you stay more focused and productive.

You can call a friend, go on social media, take a walk around your building, eat a snack, whatever you need to do. It doesn’t matter what it is, but remember to take breaks while doing your work so you don’t burn yourself out.

let in some natural light

If you have the ability, let some natural light into your dorm room if you are going to be in there for a while doing work. Dorm rooms can start to feel like little boxes after a while, so opening your curtains or blinds seriously makes a difference.

A little bit of sunlight goes a long way for your mental health, especially when you are stressed with assignments.

Don’t study in your bed

The absolute most important dorm room study tip I can tell you is to not study in your bed.

If you plan on doing a significant amount of work in your dorm, keep one thing straight: your bed is for sleeping, and your desk is for working. Not the other way around.

Once you start studying in your bed, it becomes such an easy habit to follow. And you will never be as productive laying in your bed as you would sitting at a desk. It is so much easier to get distracted on social media or fall asleep when you are doing your homework in bed.

Do yourself a favor and stick to your desk when doing your work.
