7 Items Every University Student Needs

Going to university is an exciting chapter of your life, where you’ll grow not only academically but also socially and emotionally. To properly prepare yourself, there are a few key things you’ll need besides your textbooks and favorite pillow. Whether you’re studying psychology, sports science, art, or anything in between, university life demands a high level of organization and time management.

This post is all about items every university student needs!

If you’re able to live at home whilst you study, you may find you need fewer supplies than if you’re setting off to live independently for the first time – but there are a few things you’ll still need to invest in. From planners to dressing gowns, in this post, we take a look at seven important items that every university student needs, whether you’re living on campus or at home.

Backpack/laptop bag

Investing in a good quality backpack or bag that’s big enough to hold your laptop, books, pencil case, water bottle, and snacks is one of the most important investments to make as a university student. Look for thick straps to ensure your heavy load is comfortable to carry around on-site, and check for strong stitching to avoid your bag ripping and having to be replaced prematurely.

First aid kit

Whilst it may not be the first thing that comes to mind when packing for university, a first aid kit is an invaluable tool to have at your disposal. Being prepared with a pack of plasters will come in handy if you get blisters, and learning to cook for yourself can be a major cause of minor burns and injuries. You’ll be grateful to have some painkillers to hand the morning after a good night out, too.

Robe

It’s common for student lodgings to be evacuated throughout the night in the case of a fire alarm being set off. Even though this is usually just a precaution, having a warm dressing gown and slippers that you can grab on your way out makes all the difference. You may also find that your accommodation is cooler than you’re used to at home, so be sure to pack an extra blanket for your bed, as well as thicker clothes to keep warm.

Planner

A traditional paper planner is a great asset to any student. Whilst having your calendar or study plan on your phone is helpful, being able to write out your appointments, lectures and social engagements in a planner helps to keep you feeling in control and stay on top of your schedule. You can get many fun designs and jazz it up with stickers to help you remember important dates, plus you can block out time to dedicate to clubs, studying or
revising in advance.

Refillable cup and bottle

When you’re routinely buying a coffee on the way to your first lecture, the price of disposable cups mounts up. Having an eco-friendly refillable coffee mug and water bottle will save you lots of money over the years, both at university and beyond. You’ll also be doing your bit to reduce plastic waste consumption and save the planet.

Extension leads and cables

It’s a good idea to pack at least one extension lead for your new home, as you may only have one or two electricity sockets in your room. To save constantly switching between charging your phone and your laptop, an extension lead can be set up and positioned in a handy spot away to avoid you having to reach behind furniture to access the plugs. Always be cautious of overloading your electricity sockets, though. Ensure the wires aren’t entangled and don’t cover the plugs with anything.

Pack of cards

To help break the ice and get to know your new roommates and neighbors, why not bring a deck of cards? Playing board and card games is a great way to start making friends, and the chances are your fellow students will appreciate the gesture. Whilst you could always sit and watch TV together, playing a card game invites a higher level of connection.

With these essentials in your arsenal, you’re sure to be a little more prepared for your life as a university student. Whilst it can seem stressful to gather everything you’ll need at first, try not to stress about it too much. After all, there’s always the chance to buy things as you need them later on.
