I think it is important to start this article off by saying I may have a new favorite closet in my house. It’s been on my list for a while, and I finally decided to organize the hall closet. This had basically been the dumping ground for everything. And on top of that, it must have been the weirdest shaped closet I have ever organized. My goal was to get rid of everything in the closet and instead, finally organize serving dishes and platters. They may or may not have been sitting on my dining room table for years.

my organizing process
The first step is to clear out the space. This closet is in a really narrow hallway, so it was so important to move everything to an open space. I opened up a folding table and used that and my dining room table to put everything after it had been moved. It may have looked like a bomb went off, but it has to get worse before it can get better.
Now is just the time to tackle the mess. Purge, purge, purge. I had a garbage bag nearby, as well as 2 bins. One bin is for donations, and the other is for everything that needs to be moved somewhere else in the house.
Then, I had a table full of stuff that had to be put back in the closet. It took a lot of trial and error to figure out what went where, but eventually, it all fit into the closet. It is usually like a game of tetris, but if you keep trying it will eventually all fit.

my serving dishes closet
When I organize serving dishes and platters, I absolutely loved standing them up. I bought expandable pan organizers for both of the middle shelves, which were perfect for the closet. With the extra space on top, I also added a hanging shelf for smaller items.
With such an awkwardly-shaped closet, I wanted to utilize all the wasted space. I hung all of the baskets with command hooks in the weird gap between the shelves and the wall. Finally, I used a bin for the oversized bowls on the floor.
